The story of Frances.
A few months ago, Frances, age 67, came to the Center worried she couldn't’t afford her medical treatments. She had enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan with an agent who
showed up at her home unannounced. Although the plan boasted low provider co-pays and prescription drug coverage, when Frances went to her oncologist, she learned that he would not accept the plan. Francis then turned to the Durham Center for Senior Life for help. Our Health Insurance Specialist, Lynne, helped Frances compare plans and switch to one that worked best for her.
Lynne also helped Frances to enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan and to apply for an Extra Help subsidy to cover her medications. Frances was struggling to pay medical 
bills from the hospital where she received her cancer treatment. Lynne helped her complete an application for charitable care, and, a few weeks later, Frances called to report that the hospital had not only granted her the charitable care and eliminated her debt, but they also agreed to accept her Medicare as full payment for the next year!
Frances is still receiving treatments for her cancer, but she is greatly relieved that she doesn't’t have to worry whether or not she will be able to continue treatment because of the cost.
Because the Durham Center for Senior Life exists, Frances and many more seniors in Durham like her have a place to turn to for help.
